Haunted Houses & Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a fun time for both children and adults.  Please be safe and call the proper authorities if problems arise.

Halloween Safety Tips

  • Ask an adult for help carving your pumpkin.  Many injuries happen every year due to knife wounds from carving.
  • Be careful if using a candle inside your Jack’o’Lantern.  We recommend a battery operated candle.

Trick or Treating Safety Tips

  • Regardless of your age, never go trick or treating alone.
  • For older kids who may go out unsupervised make sure a responsible adults knows which area you will be trick or treating.
  • A general practice is to not consume any unwrapped candy or food.
  • Vandalism in unacceptable.
  • Young kids should always stay within sight of the adults they are trick or treating with.
  • Take extreme caution while crossing streets.
  • Bring a flashlight.

Halloween Safety Tips for Adults

  • Drive slowly and during trick or treating hours.
  • Talk to your kids about staying safe.
  • Know the area your kids will be trick or treating.
  • Halloween is a fun time for adult parties.  Please do not drive under the influence.

Haunted House Rules

Commercial haunted houses are not allowed in the state of Massachusetts unless:

  • The building must be sprinklered or with a Building Code-only exception from the Commissioner that does not require automatic sprinklers where the floor area of a temporary special amusement building is less than 1000 sq. feet and the travel distance from any point to an exit is less than 50 feet.
  • Immediate illumination of the means of egress with light of not less than 1 foot candle at the walking surface level.
  • The shutting off or otherwise stopping of any conflicting or confusing sounds and visual distractions.
  • The activation of an approved directional exit marking that will become apparent in an emergency.
  • Upon activation of a smoke detector or the activation of the automatic sprinkler system or
    activation of any other approved fire detection device, such shall immediately sound an alarm at the building at location from which emergency action can be initiated.
  • An Emergency voice/alarm communication system, which can also serve as a public address system and audible throughout the entire special amusement building.
  • Exit signs and Exit markings are required.
  • Where mirrors, mazes or other designs are used to confound the means of egress paths, approved low level exit signs and directional path markings shall be provided and located not more than 8 inches above the walking surface and on or near the means of egress path.
  • The interior finish shall be of Class A materials only (non-combustible), per Chapter 8, Section 803.

Any person or company conducting an illegal haunted house will be fined per 527 Code of Massachusetts Regulations CMR 1 and be held legally responsible per Massachusetts General Law MGL 148.
