Grill and BBQ Safety

Finally, after a long winter, warmer weather is upon us. This time of year the charcoal or propane grills come out of hibernation and cookout season begins.  Here are some outside cooking and grilling safety tips.  Be safe, cook responsibly, and enjoy the season.

  • Grills should ONLY be used outdoors.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
  • Be sure to clean the grill and grease tray.
  • Never leave your grill unattended while cooking.
  • Always open the lid prior to lighting.
  • When lighting your grill keep your face away.
  • If the grill is off and you smell mercaptan, the odorant added to propane, you may have a leak and should immediately turn the propane valve off.

  • Grills should be placed ten feet away from the house, deck railings, and overhangs.
  • Gas grills CANNOT be used or stored on a fire escape.
  • Gas grills CANNOT be used or stored on balconies above the first floor unless there is an exterior stairway to the ground.
